FileThin NTFS allows users to save disk space using transparent
compression functionality available in NTFS. Essentially, it employs standard
NTFS files compression enhanced with the support for:
advanced filtering conditions (type-based file lists for
compression/exclusion, excluded folders);
automatic detection of minimum file size and user-defined maximum file size
for compression;
customizable handling of encrypted files, etc.
The application can
function in manual mode or compress files automatically in real time upon
creation, copying or modification (and retry compression if it has not succeeded
earlier).
How does it work? New Technology File System (NTFS)
supports files compression. It's a variant of the LZ77 algorithm, allowinf a
transparent read–write access to compressed files. Single-user systems with
limited hard disk space can benefit from NTFS compression. The slowest link in a
computer is not the CPU but the speed of the hard drive, so NTFS compression
allows the limited, slow storage space to be better used, in terms of both space
and (often) speed. NTFS compression can also serve as a replacement for sparse
files when a program (e. g. a download manager) is not able to create files
without content as sparse files.
Why FileThin NTFS? While
acting as a smarter replacement of the standard Windows ability to compress new
files on NTFS volumes, the application uses custom settings to avoid wasting CPU
time in attempts to compress archives, music, video and other data files that
are packed already.
AutoBakZ is the AutoBackup enhancement utility for Emergency Recovery Utility NT, a free registry backup and restore solution for Windows versions based on the NT kernel. AutoBakZ replaces the standard AutoBack (but needs the original binary for execution) to create a Zip SFX package containing registry backup that may be up to 75% smaller compared with conventional backups.
TskKill - utility for termination of a non-responding active process. It is invoked by a hotkey. In certain cases it is more efficient than Task Manager because it does not need to display a confirmation dialogue (which may be unavailable altogether). Of course, process killing is only recommended in extreme cases. Program can catch hotkey combination by two ways: register Windows hotkey and check key press by timer. Second way is preferred for termination full-screen games that hooks keyboard.
